Privacy policy
This covers the Twistgrip app for Android and Wear OS, and the Twistgrip watch face.
The short version
Twistgrip works on your phone and watch. There's no account, no analytics and no ads. Your rides, your location and your contacts are never sent to us or sold to anyone. The only thing that regularly leaves your phone is a request for map tiles when you look at a map.
What the app uses, and why
Android asks you before Twistgrip gets each of these, and you can turn any of them off later in Android's settings. The app keeps working without the optional ones.
Nearby devices (Bluetooth)
To connect to your bike's instrument cluster and read what it reports: speed, revs, gear, throttle, fuel, battery, engine temperature, fault lights and the bike's identification number. The app also uses Android's companion device feature to notice when the bike is nearby and reconnect.
Location, including in the background
To record the route of each ride and save where you parked. Background location lets a ride that starts with your screen off still record its route. Background location is optional.
Phone, call log and contacts
To show who's calling on the bike's display, and to let the handlebar buttons answer or reject a call. The caller's name goes to your bike over Bluetooth and isn't stored. Optional.
Notifications
For the ride in progress and for alerts such as low fuel or an indicator left on.
Where your data lives
Rides, routes, fill-ups, your settings and your bike's details are kept in the app's private storage on your phone. Android's cloud backup is switched off for Twistgrip, so none of it is copied to your Google account either.
If you use the watch app, your phone sends it the live ride numbers, fuel and range over Wear OS's own connection between your devices. The watch face shows what the watch app gives it.
What leaves your phone
- Map tiles. Maps are drawn from OpenFreeMap, using OpenStreetMap data. Like any web map, each request tells their server which part of the map is on screen, along with your IP address. Nothing else is sent with it.
- What you choose to share. Exporting your rides or sharing a ride picture hands the file to the app you pick, and goes wherever you send it.
- Automation events, if you turn them on. They're broadcast on your phone so apps like Tasker can react to rides. They carry ride numbers such as distance and fuel cost, never your location. Other apps on your phone can read them, so leave them off if you don't use them.
What we don't do
We don't collect your data, so we can't sell or share it. The app has no analytics, crash reporting or advertising code, and doesn't track you across other apps or websites. This website doesn't use cookies or analytics either.
Deleting your data
Uninstalling Twistgrip, or clearing its storage in Android's settings, deletes everything it kept. Do the same on your watch for the watch app. We don't hold a copy, so there's nothing to ask us to delete.
Children
Twistgrip is made for motorcycle riders and isn't directed at children under 13.
Changes to this policy
If what the app does with your data changes, this page changes with it, and the date at the top moves.
